It is estimated that 5G speed will enable users to download up to 1,000 times faster than 4G, meaning you’ll be able to download an entire HD film in less than a second. “4G has been unable to satisfy the needs and demands of users, organisations and businesses, as we need good bandwidth, good coverage, reliability and security,” says Adel Aneiba, Associate Professor in Internet of Things (IoT) at Birmingham City University. - Ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability
One of 5G’s main advantages will be its ultra-low latency, the time taken for a response across the web, especially for the transmission and reception of media content. 5G’s ultra-reliability will improve the experience of remote working and collaboration, giving businesses better agility, improved scheduling and lower staff turnover. “Low latency will radically improve wireless video, video games, and the world of AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality),” says Jerry Foss, Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University. - It will create new opportunities
“One of the biggest impacts we can see 5G having is the disruption of traditional business models and the opportunities that will bring,” says Abdel-Rahman H Tawil, Associate Professor in Software Engineering at Birmingham City University. “It’s likely that creative digital development will generate revenue quicker than before – hence a faster growth in creative, ideas-based SMEs.” - The establishment of private networks
5G enables network slicing, which allows the creation of several different networks over the same cellular signal. This means that businesses can run their own networks instead of using the public internet, thus allowing businesses to be free from dependency on public networks. - It will provide better connectivity
5G communications will connect both people and devices better than ever before, enabling device-to-device communications for up to a million devices per square km. Businesses will be able to thrive through the use of driverless cars, drones, artificial intelligence, robotics and remote-controlled machinery.
“5G networks promise super-fast, ultra-reliable internet which will dramatically reduce download speeds and eliminate signal drop-out,” says Mohammad Patwary of Birmingham City University. “Businesses will be able to minimise their expenditure by utilising superfast connectivity to become part of the data economy; gathering data faster and more accurately to improve their productivity and/or services.”
