The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are set to showcase the very best of Global Britain to the world, promoting the region’s strengths of: being connected and accessible; youth and inclusivity; and a focus on regeneration and rejuvenation. 

As part of the Interreg funded PURE COSMOS project, Birmingham City Council is developing a Regional Action Plan that aims to influence and support the GBSLEP in developing its Industrial Strategy and making it easier for businesses to transact and do business with Birmingham City Council and wider WMCA. One of these actions is aimed at developing a new regulatory approach, services and digital tools and test this out in support of the Commonwealth Games.

We know from previous Games that it’s possible that more than 80% of the Organising Committee’s contracts will be won by local or regional businesses and we want to make sure that the region can be as competitive as possible and deliver a lasting economic legacy across the West Midlands. This new regulatory approach aims to be tested out in support of the Commonwealth Games to help SMEs maximise the many opportunities that will be available to promote their services as well as raise the profile of the Commonwealth Games. 

The Regional Action Plan is due to be published at the end of March 2019 and Birmingham City Council will work with organisations like the Regional Better Business for All and the Council’s Regulatory Services to deliver this further.
