The region’s new Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT)* is committed to doing all that it can to support businesses both throughout the pandemic and through the subsequent recovery period.
We recognise that businesses can ill afford a continued period in which economic productivity is impacted which is why we are creating a series of sector focussed webinars to help keep regional businesses moving. This series of business recovery webinars has been produced by Birmingham City University on behalf of GBSIoT and is being delivered in conjunction with the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Made in the Midlands.
*The GBSIoT is an engineering education organisation formed by Aston University, Birmingham City University, Birmingham Metropolitan College, Solihull College and University Centre, South and City College Birmingham, University College Birmingham and the University of Birmingham. The GBSIoT is financially backed by the Department for Education and guided by a board formed from leading West Midlands engineering employers.

Christine Tolley, MCIPD, Head of Human Resources HydraForce Hydraulics Ltd.
HydraForce Hydraulics Ltd. is based in Aston Birmingham, currently employing 650 people and a turnover last year of £110m. Founded in 1990 in the USA, and 1985 in the UK, HydraForce is the global leader in the design and manufacture of high quality hydraulic cartridge valves for the mobile and industrial equipment markets. Christine joined the UK business in November 2006 to set up and develop the Human Resources function and have full responsibility for the formulation and delivery of HR strategy and practices for the European HQ based in Birmingham, covering UK, Europe and India.
Prior to joining HydraForce, Christine worked in Human Resources for 3i plc., a leading international investment business focused on mid-market Private Equity and Infrastructure.
Carl Arntzen, CEO Bosch Thermotechnology Ltd.
Having studied Mechanical Engineering at University, Carl originally joined Worcester Bosch in 1984 as a Product Development Engineer. After working in Product Development for several years, he then moved in to more commercial orientated roles, first in Product Management and then Marketing Management.
Following national and international roles throughout the Sales, Marketing and Service organisation, Carl was appointed Managing Director in October 2011 and CEO in 2015 for the whole Bosch Thermotechnology operations in the UK and Ireland. This includes the residential business operating under Worcester Bosch and the Commercial Industrial business operating under the Bosch brand.
Carl is Chairman of the Construction Product Association (CPA) and a Board Member of the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA).
Neil Heslington, Managing Director at Zytek Automotive and Head of Continental Engineering Services UK.
Neil has over 30 years of experience as an Automotive Engineer, starting his career with a broad engineering base with Rover Group. Neil moved on to develop enhanced electrical systems and powertrain technology with JaguarSport before becoming head of Electrical Engineering at TWR; taking responsibility for engine electronics at Arrows Formula1; and then moving to take up the challenge of hybrid and electric vehicle technology at Zytek Automotive.
Neil has been responsible for leading the Zytek team who developed the world’s first production hybrid outside of Japan. More recent projects include the all-electric twin inverter/motor drive axle developed for Audi in the production R8eTron and a highly successful electric powertrain in Formula E.
Born in 1961 he holds a degree in Electronic Engineering from Birmingham City University and is passionate about the application of electronics in the pursuit of highly optimised vehicles providing performance and environmental benefits.
Dr Dimitra Kalaitzi – Lecturer in Logistics and Operations Management, Birmingham City University
Dimitra has a solid experience in the field of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, with research interests in sustainability, resource efficiency and emerging technologies to support supply chain management. Dimitra joined the School of Engineering and the Built Environment at Birmingham City University as a Lecturer in Logistics and Operations Management in 2018. Before joining Birmingham City University, she was working as researcher at Cambridge University (the REMEDIES-RE-configuring MEDIcines End-to-end Supply project) and at Aston University (DISCUS: Drivetrain Integration, Supply Chain Upscaling and Streamlining) and (Next-net: Next Generation Technologies for Networked Europe project).
Regarding REMEDIES project at Cambridge university, she was involved in the Transformation Business case to outline a pathway to develop the business case for E2E supply network re-design of GlaxoSmithKline. Concerning the projects at Aston university, DISCUS project funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) to develop a software diagnostics tool that will determine the readiness level of any supply chain required to support new product introductions into the UK manufacturing sector.
